The Land
In 1998 Joanne and I decided that the time had come to move out of the city and into the country. For various reasons we had become disenchanted with city living, mostly due to the noise, pollution, and traffic.
After a reasonable degree of searching we found a fantastic 100 acre piece of land about 1 hour north of Toronto near Peterborough. The land has 90 metres (about 300ft.) of elevation from front to back and is half forest and half pasture/farmland. Currently 30 acres is farmed, 65 acres is managed forest and the rest is meadows, swamps and scrub.
I had always had it in my head that I would like to live in a home that was off-grid, energy efficient and as 'healthy' as possible. I've also always been interested in modern architecture. It has always seemed a shame to me that so many people when they have the chance to build their own homes can't get past Victorian, mock-Tudor or suburban bungalow. For more information about our home check out the house section.
The images at the right were taken at various times (and in various seasons) over the last several years. If you click on any of the images a larger version will pop up. The key in the corner of the larger pictures will show the approximate location on the land that the photo was taken as well as the direction that the photographer was facing.
Every spring the bush at the start of our driveway is flush with trilliums. The trillium is the Provincial flower of Ontario. It grows only in wooded areas and has quite a lovely three petaled flower.
